There are many books to read more about the Deaf Community, its culture and history and its language - Sign Language. Here are a few really good ones to get you started (click on each book cover illustration to find out more and where to buy online):

British Sign Language Dictionary, the British Deaf Association, Brien and Brennan, a comprehensive text about the history and development of the language as well as being the most detailed dictionary available, illustrated. A heavyweight but uniquely thorough book:


Beginners Guide to British Sign Language, BBC, Miles: A great illustrated vocabulary book to start with if you want to learn the basics and a bit more. Highly practical entry level guidance:


Sign Language: the study of the deaf people and their language, Cambridge University Press, Kyle and Woll. A easy to read but comprehensive picture of this community, its people and their language. Heavily illustrated showing how signs move in space:


Understanding Deaf Culture, Multilingual Matters, Ladd. The author is amongst the leading Deaf writers and thinkers of his day. One of the most entertaining writers on Deaf Culture he is always through and reasoned and persistently challenges the status quo when it misrepresents the truth:
