Place names in sign (source: UCL)

Try this section of the UCL London's online British Sign Language website to learn a few signs for place names e.g. Newcastle. Click the picture below to go to the UCL page and try your luck!

In the picture below the example is "Belfast". Below the large photo/video of the signer there is a list of town names in blue - just click on each one to see how that place name is signed.

Note that there are sometimes regional variations and the grey map of UK shows where that sign version is most used -shown by the large blue dots. If there is more than one variant click on the numbers above the map and you will see on the map where that version is used and a video will play the regional sign.

Very interesting - and helpful for your confidence to know what the variations look like. It's a bit like spoken languages with dialect and local words - there are some signs that are specific to a local place or region.
